Woman dies following a collision with a police car in Whitehaven

Police have confirmed that a woman has died following a collision in Whitehaven.

The incident happened at around 7:50am yesterday (19th January) on Cleator Moor Road and involved a police car and a white Suzuki Celerio.

The driver of the Suzuki was a 64-year-old woman from Cleator Moor. She was taken to hospital but died earlier today (20th January). Police say that specialist officers are continuing to support her family.

The driver of the police vehicle, a male officer aged in his 20s, suffered serious injuries.

An independent investigation into this incident will be conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Detective Chief Superintendent David Ashton, Cumbria Constabulary, said:

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the woman who has sadly died.

“The Constabulary will fully support the IOPC’s independent investigation into this incident to establish the full circumstances.”
