The family of a man who died in a collision at the weekend have said: “Each and every one of us feel like there is a part of us missing.”

Lewis Smith died when the car he was driving was involved in a collision on the A167 at Ferryhill in the early hours of Saturday morning (November 1).

Medical assistance was provided to Lewis and his passenger – a 25-year-old woman - but tragically they were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Lewis, a much-loved son, brother, cousin, nephew, uncle, grandson and partner, was 33 and lived in Newton Aycliffe.

Today, his family paid tribute to him saying: “On Saturday, November 1, we tragically lost Lewis in a road traffic accident.

“Lewis was a kind, caring, considerate and funny person. He saw the best in everyone and was always there for those who knew him. He made such an impact on the people that he met.

“He truly was a warm light in everyone’s lives and was always there to brighten moods and offer words of wisdom while digging in a cheeky remark when he could. He was a great listener to anyone that needed him, but he definitely preferred being listened to. He always made sure to live the life he wanted to while keeping his family safe and happy.

“This accident has had such an impact on those who were lucky enough to get the pleasure of knowing Lewis, each and every one of us feel like there is a part of us missing.”

His grandmother added: “He was always my baby, and always will be. I truly feel like a part of me has been ripped away, thank you for being in my life, I will always love you my perfect boy.”

His cousin, who Lewis referred to as his bro, said: “I am blessed to have known him for 27 years and will always be grateful.”

The incident happened at around 1.40am and involved a white Ford KA, which is believed to have come off the road before coming to rest on a petrol station forecourt on the opposite side of the carriageway.

The car is believed to have been travelling northbound at the time of the collision, from Chilton towards Thinford.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage of the vehicle prior to the collision.
