A teenage boy's been arrested, on suspicion of stealing a car on a test drive, which crashed when officers tried to stop it in Thornaby.

Officers received a report of a stolen Mercedes, believed to have been stolen whilst being test driven around 5:15pm on Sunday 18th January.

The suspected stolen vehicle was spotted by Stockton Neighbourhood Policing Team officers in the Thornaby area, before it made off onto Riverside Mews and then crashed. The nose of the vehicle was submerged into a river behind Pottery Wharf and the occupants then made off towards a wooded area.

Following an area search, a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, and he has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

During the area search, officers also arrested a man reportedly in possession of suspected cocaine who was unconnected to the original incident involving the Mercedes.

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug. He was charged and was due to appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Monday 19th January.
