Teesside University say they're ready to help students through clearing once they've collected their A Level results today.

Students across Teesside and North Yorkshire will be opening those envelopes to see what they get.

Dave Hudson, Director of Student Recruitment, Marketing and Communications at Teesside University, said: "Clearing's a term that's been used for many, many years and I think in the past it's been used as an opportunity who for students maybe didn't quite make their grades. Increasingly we're finding more and more students are entering the application stage for higher education at the results point, so they get their results and then they're beginning to think about what university they might go for and what course they might go for.

"It's no longer, and really it hasn't ever been, a last chance saloon for anybody. We really would encourage students who haven't thought about going to university, once they've got their results, to think 'actually, what is it I want to do? If I didn't want to go to university six months ago, when all of my friends were applying, maybe it's the right time for me now, so think about that.

"There's a lot of courses available across a number of subjects and really I mean we often look at it as going to university's one of the biggest decisions you'll make in your lifetime, so it's important that students take their time, consider their options, do their research and make sure the university and crucially the courses are what they want to do.

"Students can be studying this course for three or four years and at the end of that, they want to be able to get that graduate job so taking their time, there's no rush as well, as students will be able to apply for university for a number of weeks after they got their results, and students should take their time to make sure the course is the right one for them.

"There are students who I've seen come through our open days, come through university clearing that I've then watched three years later cross the graduation stage with their degree. It's such a rewarding time for us because we're excited for students to get their results and excited for them to start embarking on their journey of university and what's equally exciting for us is seeing that learning gain.

"If there's a course that they have in mind then that's great. If there's a subject that they really enjoy then pick that and do that course. For example, if they want to go in the healthcare profession then clearly there are degrees that are really align to that career aspiration, but if you want to be studying fine arts and you want to pursue a passion, that's equally important. Those degrees are equally as valuable to students."
