People in Teesside who are looking to head out on an adventure on this weekend is being urged to plan ahead and be safe.

Data from the Ordnance Survey shows today is THE busiest day of the year in the UK to be getting outside for walking, hiking or biking.

As part of advice before setting off, Be Adventure Smart says people should ask themselves three questions:

  • Am I confident I have the knowledge and skills for the day?
  • Do I know what to weather will be like?
  • Do I have the right gear?

Grant Grieve is from Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team and he said: "We have a broad spectrum of casualties that we encounter and most of our casualties are more to do wih injuries, probably slips, trips and falls that kind of thing.

"It's very difficult to predict when we get called out. We're ready 24/7 and we typically have got people who be able to support a call-out.

"Take food and water with you, take a torch with you because you never know what's going to happen especially if it's late afternoon and also as well to have almost like a small shelter, a lightweight, compact, down to very little but they're great for keeping the cold out if you do get into trouble."

If someone is in trouble, then you are asked to call 999 or 112, ask for the Police and then Mountain Rescue.

Grant added: "Whenever they do make that request, they'll probably be asked for their location. If they can they can give a grid reference or use the app 'What3Words' and once you give that reference, stay where you are. Don't move from that location because that's where we're going to head."
