Teesside businesses urged to help feed children during school holidays

A Middlesbrough chippy's come up with the idea

Businesses in Teesside are being urged to join a campaign to help feed children during the school holidays.

The idea came from a Middlesbrough chippy as many families may not be able to put food on the table this summer.

Jas Kullar owns Belle Vue Fisheries on Marton Road and said: "Our shop is in Grove Hill, which is a part of Middlesbrough, which doesn't have a lot of money. There's a lot of deprivation in the area so that's what made us do it. There's been a lot of talk about kids not being fed during the summer months because they're not at school, so we thought about doing a promotion for a kids meal for £1.

"We were actually thinking of doing it for five days but purely because of the cost we couldn't, so we put a post out there and we encouraged other businesses, or even people to donate, so we could do more. So far we've got about eight businesses helping.

"We've also raised close to £300 now, so with the money what we're going to do is we're going to run sandwiches and chips on the other days, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

"We've got people in Middlesbrough, we've got two or three businesses in Hartlepool that are giving and it's a range of businesses as well; pizza shops, sweet shops, cafes and we've also had a luxury treat maker and they're actually going to be doing cake pops for 50p."

Any businesses who wish to help, or anyone who wants to donate, can message Jas on their Facebook page.
