Teenagers seriously injured after electric bike collision in Middlesbrough

Roads closed after crash involving a Surron bike and BMW on Newport Road

Two teenagers sustained serious injuries following a collision between a Surron electric bike and a BMW in Middlesbrough.

The incident happened at the junction of Newport Road and Lampton Street at 7:25pm on Friday, 13th February.

Both roads were shut down for several hours as emergency services treated those involved at the scene.

The 14-year-old rider of the electric bike was initially taken to James Cook University Hospital with a bleed to the brain and a suspected fracture in his left ankle, then later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The other rider, aged 18, was also taken to James Cook University Hospital with an open fracture to his left ankle and a break to his other leg.

The driver of the grey BMW, a woman, received medical attention for bruising and shock and was subsequently taken to the hospital.

Following the incident, the 18-year-old rider was arrested on multiple charges including dangerous driving, driving without a licence, lack of insurance, driving under the influence, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Officers investigating the collision have appealed to witnesses or those with relevant information to assist in the inquiry.
