We're being warned to steer clear of the region's coasts - as Storm Eowyn brings winds of up to 70 miles an hour to the North East and Teesside.
Amber wind warnings are in place until 9pm tonight, and there are risks of snow as well.
Students and staff at Egglescliffe school in Eaglescliffe had to be evacuated earlier after high winds brough scaffolding down - on social media they've said everyone is safe
Cleveland fire brigade is on site, and Stockton council will assess damage to the school building.
Fallen trees have affected roads, including the A1 at Clifton, south of Morpeth.
An overturned lorry has been causing issues on the A19, though no one has been injured, and the Redheugh Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead has been closed due to an incident.
Passengers are being advised not to try and travel on the railways either.
Transpennine have suspended services between York and Redcar Central, and LNER have cancelled all trains north of Newcastle.
Northern Powergrid say they are working to get all homes without power back up and running as soon as possible.
