Spy gate 'just the tip of the iceberg' says Middlesbrough podcaster
The EFL announced Southampton have been expelled from the play-off final
A Middlesbrough FC podcasters says this spy gate incident is 'just the tip of the iceberg' and a deterrent needs to be put in place.
In the last 24 hours, the EFL announced an Independent Disciplinary Commission has expelled Southampton from the play-off finals.
It means Middlesbrough are reinstated and will now play against Hull at Wembley this Saturday (23rd May).
John Donovan, who is part of the Twe12th Man Podcast, said: "The EFL need to put a deterrent in place so this doesn't happen again and maintain the integrity of the football league. We don't know how often it's gone on.
"This incident could just be the tip of the iceberg. But obviously, with there being so much at stake financially in football now, I think every club has got to be wary of their opponents trying to gain an unfair advantage. And I think security around clubs will be extremely tighter next season.
"I think there could be new rules put in place or clarification of breach of any rules regarding watching an opponent. It might deter teams from doing it in future. But I think this is an opportunity for the EFL to show that they're determined that it doesn't happen again.
"I think the EFL have handled this really poorly. They haven't considered the fans in any way, shape or form."
A statement by Middlesbrough FC, issued on social media last night, said: "Middlesbrough Football Club welcomes the outcome of today’s Disciplinary Commission hearing.
"We believe this sends out a clear message for the future of our game regarding sporting integrity and conduct.
"As a club, we are now focused on our game against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday.
"Ticket information for our supporters will be available shortly."
