RNLI urging us to stay safe around the North East and Teesside

Many of the region's beaches won't have lifeguards active until later this year

We are being encouraged to take extra care around rivers and beaches this weekend across the North East and Teesside as the weather heats up.

The RNLI says the beaches will not be patrolled by its lifeguards until later on in the year.

Liam Fayle-Parr, a water safety expert at the RNLI, says it might be warm outside but the water isn't: "The problem with that at this time of the year is that it can lull you into a false sense of security because the water temperature is still very cold. 10 or 11 degrees perhaps and anything below 15 degrees in water temperature has the potential to cause cold water shock.

"If you can remember just to lean back in the water with your ears submerged, spread out your arms and legs, take a few moments to compose yourself and take control of your breathing. Cold water shock can make you gasp uncontrollably so if you can remember to take a moment to lean back in the water, that could be your lifesaver.

"The recommendation if you're going swimming is to always wear a wetsuit. We suggest that people take a tow float to stay within their depth, and to always remember that water is always moving so bear that in mind and if the water looks dangerous that's probably a sign that it is.

"Call 999 immediately if you're at the coast and make sure you ask for the coastguard. If you're in-land you ask for the fire service and then once you've made that call, keep an eye on that person and encourage them to float on their back. If you can throw them something that floats then that's even better."
