A police dog who played a vital role in catching suspects and assisting officers is retiring after more than five years of service with Cleveland Police Dog Support Unit.

Seven-year-old Razor has been involved in hundreds of cases. During his career, he helped detain 45 suspects and assisted in numerous other situations that ended peacefully.

Razor’s impressive career

As an accredited firearms support dog, Razor worked alongside armed policing teams on many occasions, taking part in significant operations.

Razor helped apprehend a suspected dangerous driver in Stockton who fled on foot. The suspect was tracked down to bushes and arrested by police.

He also tracked down and assisted the arrest of three people in Thornaby following a suspected stolen vehicle failing to stop for police.

Among other highlights, during an investigation into organised crime as part of Operation Filton, Razor played a key role in tracking suspects involved in a kidnap, firearms offences, and drug trafficking. The operation saw six men and one woman jailed for a combined 57 years and uncovered a Glock firearm and more than three million illegal pills.

A well-deserved retirement

After years of hard work, Razor is retiring to a small farm with his new owners.

Sergeant Jimmy Grieves said: “Razor has had an amazing career in policing, with many suspects detained over his tenure. We will miss him greatly, but now it’s time for his well-earned retirement, plenty of rest and lots of treats! We hope he has a long and happy retirement in his new home.”
