One of County Durham's biggest tourist attractions is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway later.

It has been two centuries since the first ever rail line was invented, here in the North East, and tonight historical re-enactment show Kynren will feature a replica of Locomotion No.1 that will steam across the stage.

Nicci Hallifax, director of S&DR200, said: "They do reference S&DR as part of their big show but what they've also done is created a little Kynren station, which is absolutely beautiful, as you walk down to the site. It's really, really nice.

"What culture brings to an area is that economic benefit because you do have people travelling. We know there's been special coach trips up to exhibitions so that's obviously already adding to it, but how much will come in the overall evaluation.

"We've had people from Canada, Australia, The Netherlands, Finland as well as people much wider afield from the UK, so we know that the message is getting out there. Move over Liverpool and Manchester because we're here and we're here to stay."
