3 people - including 2 teenagers - from Teesside have been jailed for 35 years altogether, after shooting a man through a window in Grangetown, in 2024.

A senior detective has welcomed the sentences given to two teenagers and a man who were found guilty of being involved in a firearms incident in Grangetown in 2024.

Liam McElvaney (now 23), Wayne Narey who is now 19 but who was 17 at the time, and Jayden Woodley who turned 18 this year appeared at Teesside Crown Court for a trial which began on 15th September after they’d pleaded not guilty to attempted murder some months before.

The court had heard how the victim, a man in his early 40s, sustained multiple injuries after shots were fired through the window of an address on Richmond Court in the early hours of Easter Monday (1st April) in 2024.

The injuries were initially life-threatening although the victim received hospital treatment and has made a recovery.

Over the following days, weeks and months detectives from Redcar CID were supported by neighbourhood police team colleagues and specialist units from across the force as they conducted multiple lines of enquiry, making a series of arrests and securing charges.

In September last year the three were convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and Narey was convicted of a further count of attempting to possess a firearm in relation to a separate matter

Today, McElvaney was sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison including four years on extended licence, Narey was jailed for nine years and Woodley was jailed for six years and three months.

Speaking after sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Sewell from Redcar CID said: “This was a lengthy and complex investigation following an incident which, although it was always believed to have been targeted, must still have led to great fear in the local community.

“We want to reassure all our residents that serious violence and the use of firearms in our communities will never be tolerated.

“I welcome the sentences given today and I hope this provides further reassurance to local people; it also sends a clear message to anyone tempted to get involved in serious violence and criminality that there are serious consequences and Cleveland Police will always do everything possible to bring perpetrators before the courts.”
