A dispersal order is being brought in around a Hartlepool park after fireworks were thrown towards homes and a care home, police say.

Cleveland Police are introducing the order in the Bishop Cuthbert Park area from 3pm today (Saturday 3 October).

It will be in place for 48 hours.

Police say they were called to the park last night after a large number of young people gathered in the area, allegedly for a pre-planned fight.

Many left when officers arrived, but smaller groups stayed.

Fireworks were then launched towards residential properties and in the direction of a care home.

Under the dispersal order, officers can immediately direct anyone involved in antisocial behaviour to leave the area.

Anyone who returns within the 48-hour period could be arrested.

The order covers parts of Hart Road, Easington Road, Throston Grange Lane, Falcon Road, Goldfinch Road, Bluebell Way, Primrose Road and Merlin Way.

Hartlepool Neighbourhoods Inspector Adrian Dack said: “Given the many recent reports of youth ASB in and around Bishop Cuthbert Park, we have no option but to bring in this dispersal order.

“Last night’s incidents where residents reported fearful about large numbers of young people congregating in public spaces and throwing fireworks were completely unacceptable and we will not tolerate it.

“Obviously such behaviour presents a clear risk to public safety, particularly given the vulnerability of residents within the care setting.

“I would appeal to parents and carers to ensure they know where their children and young people are going on an evening and what they’re getting up to. ”

Graffiti concerns

Another dispersal order is also in place due to other reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage including graffiti in the town’s parks.

Police say they've received reports that young people are gathering in large groups causing noise and disorder.

The dispersal order came into place at 3pm today and covers Owton Manor Lane, Catcote Road, Brierton Lane Stockton Road back to Owton Manor Lane.

The second dispersal order area

Neighbourhoods Inspector Adrian Dack said: “Unfortunately we are seeing ongoing issues of general nuisance, crime and costly damage to public property and community facilities in our parks which is affecting others’ peaceful enjoyment of the town’s green spaces.

“We’re working with our local authority partners and the community itself to address the issues ,and carry out problem solving via engagement as well as by enforcement.

“Officers engage with youngsters wherever possible and explain to them the consequences of becoming involved in this type of completely unacceptable behaviour, there are also targeted interventions with young people who have already been identified and we’re conducting high visibility patrols to deter issues and provide a reassuring presence for the public."
