Police in the Grangetown area will have extra powers to crack down on violence and disorder - until 6pm tomorrow evening.

The section 60 order gives officers enhanced powers to stop and search individuals, it also includes individuals having to remove face coverings.

It will be in place from 6pm on Friday 17 October until 6pm on Saturday 18 October and will cover the area highlighted on the map below. It includes Richmond Court, Birchington Avenue, Arundel Road, Somerset Road, Griffiths Road and Kingsley Road.

This follows several incidents that occurred from 6pm on Thursday 16 October in the Richmond Court area, including the serious assault of a man, a firearm discharged at a car, a vehicle fire, criminal damage and a car driven into a house.

The investigation is progressing, and a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 grievous bodily harm, arson, criminal damage and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. A woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They are both currently in police custody for questioning.

Chief Superintendent Rachel Stockdale, head of local policing, said: “Since the incidents occurred there has been a highly visible policing presence in the area to provide reassurance to the community and to deter individuals from committing violence and anti-social behaviour.

“Please be assured that this visibility will continue over the weekend, if you have concerns please do speak to an officer.

“While the investigation is ongoing, we are imposing an order which will grant officers further powers to stop and search some individuals in the area covered in the map. This is to ensure the safety of residents and members of the public.

“To report a crime please contact Cleveland Police on 101 or in an emergency always dial 999.”
