A 60-year-old man who died after being struck by a van in Brandon has been remembered by his family as “one of the last gentlemen in life.”

Paul Smith was hit by a white Citroen Dispatch on Sawmills Lane during the early evening of 9th January. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment but died in hospital the following afternoon.

Smith’s heartbroken nieces paid tribute to their beloved uncle, describing him as a kind and positive person who lived a full life despite challenges.

“Uncle Paul was one of the last gentlemen in life; he was kind, considerate, thoughtful and polite, and he always thought of others before himself,” they said.

“Uncle Paul was the most positive person ever and didn’t let anything get him down. He lived a full and happy life, despite the challenges he faced throughout his life.

“He loved all sports and was a long-time member of Durham County Cricket Club where he spent many a happy hour.

“He also loved a flutter on the horseracing and a pint or a game of bingo with his friends.

“He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed not just by his family, but all of the many, many people who knew him and the community of Brandon.”

The incident occurred at approximately 4.45pm, and the driver of the van involved was unhurt.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are keen to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have relevant dashcam footage.

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 261 of January 9, or visit www.durham.police.uk .
