A puppy, which was involved in a suspected dog attack in Middlesbrough yesterday, has died.

19 week old German Shepherd, Lincoln, was attacked by another dog near Hemlington Lake, and didn't survive his injuries.

Police say a Pitbull-type dog seriously injured another pet, and bit a woman.

The animal was destroyed at the scene.

Officer in the case Detective Constable Joyce said: “Lincoln’s owners are aware of this update, and all our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.

“Enquiries are ongoing, and we would again appeal for anyone who saw or knew the dog which sadly had to be put down after the attack to get in touch, as well as anyone who witnessed the incident or has any footage from before or during it.

“Please contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 125672.

“Due to the fact arrests have been made, and a criminal investigation is ongoing, we would appeal to the public not to speculate online as this may prejudice legal proceedings. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding.”

A man and woman, in their 30's, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Yesterday Assistant Chief Constable Dave Sutherland said: “Initial indications are that a member of the public was walking her dog when she was approached by an unaccompanied Pitbull type dog which then attacked her pet.

“The lady sustained a dog bite during the incident and thankfully this is not believed to be of a serious nature, however sadly her own dog sustained very serious injuries and was taken to the vet by police officers, where it is currently receiving emergency treatment.

“Unfortunately, due to the serious nature of this incident and the potential risk to other people in the immediate area, our specially trained officers had to put the dog down near the scene.

“We understand that anyone who witnessed the initial attack or the aftermath may have experienced shock or distress however the safety of the public is always paramount."
