Cyclist dies following a collision with a car near Bishop Auckland

A man has died following a collision in County Durham as police launch an appeal for witnesses.

Officers were called shortly after 7.40am yesterday (23rd December) to a collision on the A688 near Binchester Blocks involving a BMW 5 Series and a cyclist.

The cyclist – a man in his thirties – sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment.

Police say he died yesterday afternoon as a result of his injuries. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene.

An investigation has been launched and officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision.

They would also like to hear from anyone who has any dashcam footage of the car or cyclist prior to the incident.
