A proposed small-scale children’s home in Redcar faces opposition from Dormanstown ward councillor Debbie Powlay, who has raised concerns over parking and safety.

The planning application seeks to convert a residential property on Corporation Road into a facility caring for up to three children, aged eight to 18.

Cllr Powlay has formally objected, emphasizing residents' concerns about limited parking, heightened traffic due to nearby schools and a college, and risks posed by local infrastructure such as busy roads and railway tracks.

In her objection, Cllr Powlay asserted that parking arrangements outlined in the application fall short of being suitable, citing space limitations and existing signage directing vehicles to park elsewhere.

She also highlighted her concerns regarding the projected number of staff and visitors, which she expects to exceed typical family home activity.

The councillor has moved to "call in" the application for a committee decision over officer delegation, foregrounding the importance of scrutiny given the impact on local residents.

Meanwhile, Agincare Property Limited, the applicant, has submitted supporting statements emphasizing "much needed" care provision in the area for children with complex needs, with assurances of registered compliance with care standards and operating with minimal traffic interference akin to a large family dwelling.

The property, chosen purposefully for its peaceful location, aims to offer a nurturing environment for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Agincare stresses their commitment to community reinforcement alongside children's welfare, offering reassurances about supervision and potential for social worker-agreed independent activities for older teens.

Nonetheless, several neighboring objections have been logged regarding the development.

Any interested residents can follow the application's progress via their local planning authority's channels.
