Racehorse breeder Ben Sangster has applied for planning permission to make changes to the famous Manton House Stables near Marlborough.

Thoroughbreds have been reared and trained at Manton since 1860, and the Grade-II listed stable range at Manton House was constructed between 1870 and 1880.

Vernon’s Pools heir Robert Sangster bought Manton Estate with its already-famous stables in 1985, and parts of the estate remained in the family following his death in 2004.

His son has lodged a planning application with Wiltshire Council to make changes to a first floor apartment in the famous quadrant.

Until 1984 the flat was a veterinary laboratory, office and library facility.

In 1987 it was converted into a three-bedroom apartment in association with the former use of the site as a racehorse yard.

It was registered as The Library Flat for council tax purposes in 1993 and has continued to be used as an apartment ever since.

Application is to remodel the inside of the apartment to create a new living space with three bedrooms – one en suite – along with a snug, kitchen/diner, study, and sitting room.

The application also seeks to install conservation rooflights, a flue for a wood burner, and a new dormer window.

A decision is expected by January 27.
