Wiltshire volunteer helping abuse survivors rebuild their lives
Nina Fairman is encouraging others to do the same
A Wiltshire woman volunteering with a domestic abuse charity has told us about he role in helping survivors get back on their feet.
Nina Fairman has been volunteering for two years, supporting people recovering from abuse, and is calling for others to do the same.
In her role, Nina helps survivors make plans for their future, putting goals in place, as they rebuild their confidence.
"It's been a real privilege to just be there and be a friend," Nina said, adding: "Sometimes I'm just a pair of ears and the whole call can be just be them off loading and just having to get it out there and I say very little.
"Then we get to the end and they say, 'oh, I feel much better now, thank you very much!'"
She describes her experience working with survivors as 'humbling' and 'emotional' and that it's a pleasure to watch them grow.
She said she tells the people she works with to take it 'one step at a time'.
"Don't look at this big picture of what you've got to do. Just one thing at a time and then look back at the big picture where you've come and how many of those little steps you've made."
She told Greatest Hits Radio it's been the best thing she's ever done.
"It could just be that they've had a rubbish day and they had nobody to talk to about it, and I was there and I listened and that's helped them feel better.
"I think that is such a wonderful thing to do. It takes a small amount of your time."
She's encouraging people to also volunteer and help survivors on their path back to normality, but it can also be a step back into the working environment.
Nina said: "I think also if people perhaps are going back into the job market, volunteering is a great way to, if they've been out of it for a while, take that first step.
"There's not the pressure of targets to meet and all of that sort of stuff."
