Increased access to shelter is being made available to Wiltshire's rough sleepers with temperatures set to drop heading into the New Year.

A warning of cold temperatures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has been issued across the South West until Monday 5th January.

It's leading to a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) being activated in Wiltshire.

The SWEP allows local authorities to provide emergency accommodation for rough sleepers during extreme weather.

It aims to prevent death and offer a chance for people to engage with services, even if they normally choose not to, providing a critical safety net beyond the standard provision.

Rough sleepers in Wiltshire can access shelter through Alabaré at their support services in Salisbury and Chippenham.

The previous SWEP activation in November saw 11 people supported by the Salisbury-based charity, with two later moving into supported living accommodation provided by the organisation.

Two more were given a space in the Homes for Veterans service, while three remained with the charity until Wiltshire Council offered alternative provision.

One was able to move into private rented housing.

Further information on how the public can help rough sleepers during the SWEP provision can be found here.
