Wiltshire Police targets rural crime in week of action
County-wide initiative aims to prevent crime and support countryside communities
Wiltshire Police has launched a new initiative as part of the national Rural Crime Week of Action, focusing on enforcement, prevention, and community engagement to tackle rural crime across the county.
The campaign, which runs throughout the week, intends to disrupt organised criminal activity and safeguard rural areas by building on Wiltshire Police's ongoing commitment to this issue.
Efforts have been strengthened through enhanced training, improved intelligence gathering, and collaboration with the National Rural Crime Unit, neighbouring police forces, farming organisations, and local communities.
Wiltshire Police has taken significant steps over the past two years, including making 44 arrests related to rural crime, charging 38 offenders, and seizing 19 vehicles. The effectiveness of these measures is reflected in a 500% increase in arrests, charges, and vehicle seizures over the past four years.
The week-long initiative will also address issues such as livestock worrying, a concern Chief Constable Catherine Roper addresses in a video, alongside advocating responsible dog ownership.
Inspector Andy Lemon, Tactical Force Lead for Rural Crime, emphasised the project's importance:
"Wiltshire is one of the most rural counties in the country and we understand the impact crime can have on our farming communities, landowners, businesses and residents.
"Rural Crime Week of Action provides an opportunity to showcase the work taking place throughout the year to protect our rural communities and target those responsible for offending in our countryside."
