Wiltshire Council to implement revised parking charges with delayed start for system checks
Residents to see improved parking arrangement from September
Wiltshire Council is set to implement revised parking charges on 4th September, following a public consultation and thorough system checks to ensure a smooth transition for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The consultation, which garnered 1,762 responses, led to several amendments and withdrawals of original proposals in response to feedback from local stakeholders.
Pay and display parking charges will increase by an average of 20%, rounding to the nearest 10p, marking the first adjustment since 2022 amidst a 28% inflation rise over the period.
The revision also extends parking charges to 7am-7pm in short-stay car parks, maintaining the 8am-6pm schedule for long-stay sites.
Sunday charging hours will remain unchanged to support leisure activities, starting from 10am.
Councillor Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, highlighted the necessity of the increase due to inflating service costs, aiming to support transport infrastructure improvements, including the rural bus network.
Cllr Thorn emphasized the balance struck in supporting town centres, effective parking management, and investing in county-wide transport services.
The revisions further align with commitments under Our Wiltshire Plan to enhance public transport options.
Specific changes include the introduction of weekend charges for selected council-owned car parks like County Hall in Trowbridge and Bridge Centre in Chippenham.
In Salisbury, The Maltings car park maintains its existing hours due to its city centre role, while Sunday street parking charges remain absent.
Through these measures, Wiltshire Council aims for a positive customer experience and continued investment in transport and highway services.
