Two in court charged with selling counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes
Police have said "Counterfeit tobacco is not a victimless crime"
Two men from different parts of the country have admitted to selling counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes from a store in Swindon.
Barham Kadir Poor, 18, from Rodbourne, Swindon, and Zhilwan Qaraman, 30, from Stockton-on-Tees appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on 16th July.
Both pleaded guilty to the charges related to counterfeit goods.
In addition, Qaraman confessed to possession of criminal property and obstructing police.
These crimes came to light when officers visited the Lavy store on Commercial Road following reports of suspicious activity in March.
Authorities seized counterfeit tobacco, cigarettes, and a significant amount of cash from the premises, leading to the store's closure order.
PC Paul Bezzant emphasised that counterfeit tobacco affects legitimate businesses and is often linked to organised crime networks.
"Counterfeit tobacco is not a victimless crime," he said, adding that Wiltshire Police, alongside their partners, does not tolerate such illegal activities and will enforce action against those involved.
The duo is scheduled to appear again at Swindon Magistrates Court on 9th September 2026.
