Swindon hospital braces for winter bed shortfall amid rising demand

Great Western Hospital faces challenges with discharge delays and capacity pressures

Great Western Hospital in Swindon anticipates an 81-bed shortfall this winter, driven by delay in patient discharges and pressure on emergency services.

A comprehensive 'Winter Preparedness' document highlights the challenges facing Swindon's health and care system and outlines measures for effective service delivery amidst increased demand.

Out of the 81 beds potentially needed, 33 remain unmitigated, meaning no measures have yet addressed this gap.

Key challenges include 'No Criteria to Reside' (NCTR) patients, who occupy hospital beds despite their care needs being manageable in more appropriate settings.

GWH reports operating above planned capacity with 559 beds available, surpassing the targeted 552 beds, further straining resources.

Emergency Department pressure has intensified, with an 11% increase in adult patient attendance, via both self-presentation and ambulance.

Efforts aim to reduce NCTR numbers from 107 to 60 by January 2027, with initiatives promoting Home First, Hospital at Home services, and community-based support.

Swindon partners are enhancing primary care through winter illness hubs, GP clinics, targeted support initiatives, health inequality programmes, and vaccination drives.

The collaborative Winter Plan involves Swindon Borough Council, GWH, the Integrated Care Board, and sector partners.

The plan's focus on prevention, community care, and timely discharge aims to fortify resilience and maintain high care standards throughout winter.

These considerations will be discussed at Swindon Borough Council's Adult’s, Health and Housing Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting on 4th November.
