The National Parking Platform (NPP), a government-promoted system aimed at simplifying parking payments while encouraging competitive pricing, could soon be adopted by Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Council.

Despite the platform's successful trial with 15 councils and three private operators over the past year, Swindon and Wiltshire have yet to participate.

With Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander, Transport Secretary, advocating for the platform as part of the government's Better Connected strategy, the NPP is positioned as a convenient "one-stop shop" for motorists, eliminating unnecessary complications during parking transactions.

In February, resident Zach Hawson enquired about Swindon Borough Council's stance on integrating the NPP amidst its transition to a cashless parking system.

Council leader Jim Robbins acknowledged the consideration of NPP during the choice of a new car park operator.

Cabinet member for transport, Chris Watt, found the platform's proposition "very compelling" and assured it would be considered.

Swindon Borough Council remains in discussions surrounding its options and plans to provide an update at a later date.

Meanwhile, Wiltshire Council, though in early exploratory stages, offers MiPermit as its digital parking solution.

Cllr Martin Smith, cabinet member for transport, noted MiPermit's cashless and ticketless options without convenience fees—an advantage in terms of value for motorists.

MiPermit also provides services like remote session extensions, digital permits, EV charging information, and alerts to prevent overstaying.

Across the region, drivers must navigate various parking apps, often hindered by weak mobile signals.

Different apps, including PayByPhone, MiPermit, and others, are in use, depending on specific locations such as Gloucester, Cheltenham, and Winchester.

The consideration of the NPP by Swindon and Wiltshire councils reflects a potential shift towards more streamlined parking payment systems to enhance regional accessibility and convenience.
