Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched the Swindon Ultrasound Spoke, a new training facility aimed at cultivating skilled sonographers and strengthening diagnostic services across the south west.

Officially opened on 6th October 2026, the facility was developed in partnership with the South West Imaging Training Academy (SWITA) to provide high-quality education and training opportunities for trainee sonographers and radiology residents from the region.

Led by Practice Educator Dawn McCafferty, the facility offers hands-on clinical training, one-to-one support, and focused learning endeavors, increasing regional capacity and enhancing trainee experience.

Sonography is a critically in-demand area within diagnostic services, facing national workforce shortages, and the new facility marks significant investment in developing imaging professionals.

Alan Tidy, Deputy Divisional Director for Medicine at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, emphasizes the importance of investing in workforce development to meet future patient needs.

Rachael Hilton, SWITA Co-Clinical Director, praised the collaborative efforts and noted the importance of the hub-and-spoke model in supporting a sustainable and competent diagnostic imaging workforce.

The facility is part of a network of ultrasound hubs and spokes in the South West region, representing a significant step in expanding access to dedicated training facilities.

Its development is expected to foster improved access to diagnostics and reinforce healthcare capabilities in line with current and future demands.
