Swindon RFC have issued a statement as police investigate a stabbing on the field.

Bosses say they are doing all they can to support officers following the incident earlier this week, which the club say 'is not connected' to them 'in any way'.

On Facebook, they added: "You may have seen police reports about an incident at the rugby club yesterday afternoon.

"The incident occurred on the field, and not in the club (which was closed at the time), and is not connected to Swindon RFC in any way.

"Since this was brought to our attention we have been doing all we can to support the police as they make their enquiries."

This comes as police appeal for witnesses following the incident.

Wiltshire Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses following a stabbing in Swindon yesterday afternoon (09/06).

"At around 3.55pm, we received a report that a man in his 20s had been stabbed on a field next to the rugby club in Greenbridge Road.

"He was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries and has since been discharged.

"A scene was subsequently set up at the rugby club to allow for enquiries to take place and has since been lifted.

"We are keen for anybody who witnessed the incident or any altercation to contact us.

"If you can help, please contact us on 101 quoting reference 54260068868."
