An application to designate Swindon's Oasis Leisure Centre as an Asset of Community Value has been rejected by the Borough Council.

Campaigners have been fighting to save the building, and get it reopened to the public.

They've described the decision from the local authority as a 'shocking blow'.

Councillors had been recommended to reject the application on a couple of grounds - saying 'there has not been actual use of the Nominated Property, neither has the Nominated Property been used in the “recent past”', with the site shut to the public for the last four years.

The officers' report also suggested 'neither is it reasonable to think that there will be a time in the next five years when there could be a non-ancillary use of the building on the Nominated Property which will further the social wellbeing or social interests of the local community'.
