Plans are underway for Swindon’s first Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre (NMHC), with the facility expected to open by the end of the 2027/28 financial year, pending planning approvals.

Part of a nationwide initiative led by NHS England, NMHCs offer open-access, non-clinical mental health support to adults without requiring referrals.

The centre in Swindon will provide crisis support, including a walk-in service akin to a crisis café, available 24 hours.

Other anticipated offerings include digital and phone support, planned clinical care, and assistance with housing, employment, and welfare.

Designed to address support gaps and improve accessibility, NMHCs aim to reach underserved communities and support individuals not meeting secondary care thresholds.

Currently, no new funding has been allocated for NMHCs, with systems expected to utilize existing resources for their establishment.

A working group is overseeing the centre's development, reporting to both the Swindon Place Board and the BSW Mental Health Delivery Group.

Swindon Borough Council’s Adult’s, Health and Housing Overview and Scrutiny Committee will discuss the plan on November 4.

While Swindon demonstrates strengths in certain mental health areas, challenges like dementia diagnosis rates persist, with ongoing efforts to tackle them.

The town already houses facilities like Oriana House, a women-only mental health crisis house.

Swindon aims to enhance mental health service delivery as part of broader improvements across the county.
