Swindon Borough Council is conducting a consultation on the draft Local Plan 2043, addressing residents’ concerns over housing developments, infrastructure, and leisure amenities.

The Local Plan outlines ambitions for homes, infrastructure, and community facilities over the next 20 years, with the 'Regulation 19' stage marking the final opportunity for comments before submission for independent examination.

Neil Robinson, lead campaigner for Save Oasis Swindon, criticized the current plan for prioritizing housing over essential leisure facilities like the Oasis.

Robinson voiced concerns about the lack of infrastructure to support new developments and urged for the Oasis's expansion and the restoration of its sports hall.

Josie Lewis, another member of the Save Oasis group, stressed the importance of preserving open spaces in the Local Plan.

Residents have also raised concerns about the rising number of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in Swindon.

Shelagh Gough from Old Town advocates for stricter licensing and controls, favoring an Article 4 direction to manage HMO proliferation.

Council policy currently limits HMOs to 20 percent within a 100-meter buffer area.

Tim Thomas, lead planning policy officer at Swindon Borough Council, acknowledged mixed feedback from drop-in sessions.

Thomas highlighted positivity surrounding town centre developments and improved facilities.

Swindon residents have until 12th November to share their thoughts on the Local Plan.
