A charity supporting those most in need across Wiltshire and Swindon is calling for support to help keep people warm this winter.

The Surviving Winter campaign, launched 15 years ago by Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation, offers crucial support to those impacted by fuel poverty in the area, with more than 30,000 people in the county affected.

The initiative was originally created to provide an outlet for older people who chose to redirect their winter fuel payments from the government to others in need in their local community.

Over its history, the programme has granted more than £2.1 million to help vulnerable groups, including older people and those living with disabilities, cope during the coldest months.

Rising demand and extended help

The cost of living crisis has widened the scope of those seeking assistance. Fiona Oliver, joint chief executive of Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation, said that families with young children, alongside individuals on lower incomes, are increasingly turning to the initiative for help.

“Cost of living challenges have affected many people across the county. This year, we’re extending our programme to support low-income families and individuals, with the help of our partners,” Fiona said.

The foundation works with organisations such as Citizens Advice Wiltshire, Citizens Advice Swindon, the Centre for Sustainable Energy, and Age UK Wiltshire to provide tailored help.

From direct fuel grants to signposting support services and benefits, these partnerships are addressing thousands of cases of fuel poverty across the county.

How donations make a difference

Last year, the initiative assisted over 1,500 households and unlocked an additional £1.4 million through advice and grants.

According to Fiona, this ensured people could heat their homes and access warm meals throughout the challenging winter period.

Reflecting on the huge need highlighted by the campaign’s work, Oliver described hearing distressing stories from families unable to afford basic heating or even power for a kettle.

“We feel privileged to work with our dedicated partners and donors who ensure that local communities receive the support they desperately need during the winter months,” she said.

Although any donation is welcomed, individuals can redirect their government winter fuel payments or contribute directly via Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation's website.

The Surviving Winter campaign continues to be a lifeline for people facing significant hardship during the colder months, fostering local support for those in need.
