South West Wiltshire MP marks 25 years in Parliament
Dr Andrew Murrison has been marking the milestone
Dr Andrew Murrison is celebrating 25 years of serving in Parliament, marking his long-standing commitment to the South West Wiltshire area since his first election in June 2001.
Dr Murrison, who was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for the then Westbury constituency, has expressed his gratitude for the continuous support from his constituents.
"It's been an honour and a privilege to represent the area in which Jenny and I have raised our family," Dr Murrison said.
"I look forward to continuing to serve Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster, Mere and the surrounding villages - if the voters will have me, for another 25 years!"
Dr Murrison's career has spanned both military and civilian sectors, having served in the Royal Navy and later as a general practitioner in Wiltshire, before stepping into the political arena.
The declaration of his victory in 2001 was followed by a significant career wherein he has held multiple roles, including Shadow Defence Minister, Prime Minister's special representative for First World War Centenary commemorations, and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office.
Dr Murrison was part of Progressive Conservative movements, voting in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill in 2013 and promoting a fully elected House of Lords.
Throughout his career, he has been re-elected several times with increasing majorities, reflecting his engagement with and reliability to his constituents.
His re-election in 2024 with a vote share of 33.8% and a majority of 3,243 highlights ongoing support despite the challenges in political landscapes.
