Concerns raised over new recycling centre plans in Royal Wootton Bassett
Town council wary of traffic and environmental impact
Plans to open a new household recycling centre in Royal Wootton Bassett have stirred concerns over traffic and environmental impact among local officials.
Wiltshire Council selected the town as the site to replace the recycling facilities at Purton and Calne.
The proposed location is adjacent to the council's existing salt depot on Marlborough Road, chosen after reviewing 21 potential sites.
However, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council has voiced concerns in a letter penned by town clerk Mark Hopkins to Councillor Helen Belcher, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for assets.
The town council's apprehensions include the facility's impact on traffic, the environment, the town centre, and taxpayer costs.
Traffic concerns are at the forefront, with worries about increased vehicle movements, potential congestion, and strain on local roads, particularly during weekends.
Hopkins stressed the risk of delays and queues affecting the area, with the site entrance located on a blind bend.
The town's centre might also suffer from heightened traffic, worsened by ongoing commuter traffic and surrounding development growth.
Further issues highlighted by the council include vehicle emissions, noise pollution, dust, litter, and the industrialisation of the area.
Wiltshire Council has been requested to justify the necessity and cost-effectiveness of the new facility.
Councillor Helen Belcher acknowledged the town council's concerns and stated that more work is needed before confirming the site suitability and submitting a planning application.
Belcher assured that Wiltshire Council will collaborate closely with Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council as the project progresses.
She reiterated the council’s aim to provide a modern, accessible recycling centre for local residents swiftly and efficiently.
