Residents in North Wiltshire have been warned to stay cautious following a series of scams involving fake workmen claiming to repair underground pipes.

Rogue traders have targeted vulnerable people in Chippenham, Corsham, and Calne, conning them out of thousands of pounds by posing as workmen offering urgent repairs.

In response to the scams, the local Neighbourhood Policing Team organized a ‘Stop the Scammers’ event across these towns, with the support of Wiltshire Council’s Trading Standards Team, Fraud Prevention, and the Bobby Van Trust.

Preventing Scams and Protecting Residents

Officers were present in Corsham, Chippenham, and Calne, providing information on spotting rogue traders and advising on steps to take if targeted.

The event follows incidents in Box, Chippenham, and Calne, where offenders called residents to schedule visits, falsely claiming the need for costly repairs ranging from £3,000 to £7,000.

Victims were shown fake photos of damage, paid for repairs, and later discovered that no work had been done.

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents, and Trading Standards is investigating the possibility of a wider regional scam.

PC Jess Swanborough commented on the event, stressing that vigilance is essential, as scammers are usually convincing, leaving victims feeling upset and embarrassed.

Promoting Trusted Traders

Wiltshire Council Trading Standards is advocating for its Buy With Confidence scheme, helping consumers find legitimate businesses.

The scheme ensures traders comply with legal standards, allowing them to display its logo after undergoing strict checks.

Gideon Hunter, Public Protection Officer, advised residents to seek recommendations, obtain multiple quotes, and use Buy With Confidence traders for any home work needed.
