A murder investigation is underway in Calcutt near Cricklade after a man in his 30s was fatally shot at a traveller site this morning.

Emergency services arrived at the scene after a report was received from the South Western Ambulance Service at around 8.15am.

Despite efforts, the man was declared deceased, and his next of kin have been informed.

Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident: a man in his 70s and a woman in her 40s, on suspicion of possession of a firearm and assisting an offender.

They are currently in custody for questioning.

A cordon has been established at the scene with a significant policing presence remaining in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker from the Major Crime Investigation Team says: “Enquiries are ongoing at the site and in the wider area to establish the circumstances which have led to this incident and locate all the people involved.”

The road leading to the site has been closed to facilitate the investigation, and those in the vicinity are urged to respect the cordon. An increased police presence is expected throughout the evening to continue enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Walker has also appealed for anyone with information or who witnessed anything suspicious earlier today to come forward. He said, “We are really keen to hear from anybody who has any information or witnessed anything suspicious this morning.”
