Five people have been arrested and 103 drivers stopped during a targeted operation by police against criminal activity on Swindon’s roads.
On 5 September, officers carried out a joint operation focused on the Fatal Five offences and on denying criminals the use of the road network.
The Fatal Five are the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities on UK roads.
Wiltshire Police continues to run proactive operations across the county to identify and stop offenders.
Arrests made during the operation included:
Two individuals arrested on suspicion of drug driving; both have been released on bail.
One individual arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. A Section 18 search was conducted, and intelligence was gathered. The suspect has been bailed.
One individual arrested in connection with a domestic abuse offence from another force area. This case is being handled externally.
Traffic enforcement results:
103 motorists were dealt with, including:
71 vehicles caught speeding, with the highest recorded speed being 71mph in a 40mph zone.
32 vehicles stopped for various offences, including driving without tax, MOT or insurance; insecure loads; not wearing seat belts; red-light violations; vehicles in dangerous condition; and links to ANPR hotlists.
One stolen vehicle was recovered, and five vehicles were seized.
Wiltshire Police is urging all drivers to take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel, as officers continue to tackle the most dangerous driving behaviours known as the Fatal Five.
Sergeant Will Ayres from the Roads Policing Unit said: “Our officers are out every day tackling the driving behaviours most likely to cause serious harm or death.
"The Fatal Five aren’t just rules—they’re lifesavers.
"Yet we still hear excuses from drivers caught drink or drug driving, speeding, or using their phones. Many simply didn’t think they’d get stopped. But we’re here, and we’re watching.”
The Fatal Five offences include:
- Speeding
- Drink and drug driving
- Not wearing a seat belt
- Using a mobile phone while driving
- Careless or dangerous driving
Sergeant Ayres also spoke about the emotional toll of delivering tragic news to families: “Knocking on a door to tell someone their loved one has died is the hardest part of this job.
"The moment they see a police officer, you can see the fear and heartbreak before a word is spoken.
"It’s a moment that changes lives forever.”
Wiltshire Police is asking all road users to think twice before taking risks and say every decision behind the wheel matters—not just for the driver, but for everyone around them.
