Midfielder Matty Virtue signs two-year-deal with Swindon Town

Midfielder Matty Virtue has joined Swindon Town on a two-year contract.
The 29-year-old will join the Robins for the 2026/2027 season after two seasons with Fleetwood Town.
The Surrey-born midfielder began his youth career at Chelsea, before signing for Liverpool at the age of 10.
He developed at Liverpool over 11 years, captaining the Reds’ under 23s team in 2018.
He gained his first experience of senior football later that season when he joined Notts County on loan for the second half of the 2018/2019 season. Virtue impressed during his spell with the Magpies, making 15 appearances as the club secured a place in the Sky Bet League Two Play-Offs.
Following a successful loan stint, Virtue completed a permanent move to Blackpool in the summer of 2019.
He remained at Bloomfield Road for the following five years, making over 100 appearances for Blackpool and contributing to a combined 12 goals and assists for The Tangerines.
Midway through his spell on the Fylde coast, Virtue joined SkyBet League One side Lincoln City on loan for the 2022/2023 season, making 36 appearances for The Imps.
In the summer of 2024, Virtue signed for Fleetwood Town and enjoyed a particularly successful spell at Highbury, establishing himself as a key figure for The Cods.
During two year stint in Lancashire, he made 89 appearances for Fleetwood, contributing towards a combined 19 goals and assists.
Speaking on the signing Virtue said: “Obviously there’s one aim everyone knows it, and you want to be successful in your football career, the club wants to be successful, so why would I not want to join.”
“It’s always nice to come back in; there’s always a bit of nerves meeting a new set of lads, and a new staff, but they’ve all been really helpful and accommodating and I’m looking forward to kicking on.”
