Mental health expert on coping during winter months
Swindon and Gloucestershire Mind are giving advice on improving mental health
January is often considered a challenging month for mental health, while some people may feel the winter months are harder due to the darker and colder conditions, Lynette Buebird, mental health trainer at Swindon and Gloucestershire, Mind say mental health challenges are complex and can affect individuals differently throughout the year.
We’re being reminded it’s important to ease self-imposed pressure, particularly around New Year’s resolutions. Instead focus on small, manageable changes rather than overwhelming goals, and prioritising consistency where possible.
Simple activities such as getting out into daylight or making small adjustments indoors, like opening curtains or taking a morning shower, can improve mood.
“Self-care looks different for everyone,” Lynette said. “It’s about identifying activities that keep you well, whether it's a daily walk, connecting with others, or relaxing with a film at home."
Keeping a log of habits and practices that promote well-being can act as a reminder during difficult periods.
We’re also being reminded of the value of communication in addressing mental health struggles, whether choosing to talk to a loved one or accessing external services.
Warm spaces, such as those available in Swindon and Gloucestershire, offer welcoming environments to socialise and feel more connected. Support services such as Swindon and Gloucestershire Mind, Citizens Advice Bureau, and Step Change can provide guidance on broader issues like financial concerns, which also impact mental health.
For those who may find talking difficult, options like text services and helplines such as Shout can be effective alternatives.
Lynette added: “Sometimes just getting that conversation out is really important.
“Talking out loud can help”.
