MCR Property Group has received approval to proceed with its plans to convert the former Intel building in Swindon into residential flats, with significant alterations to the existing structure now permitted.

The developer, responsible for transforming the office block into 112 apartments near Old Town, will demolish the warehouse component, added to the main building in 1985, as well as the triangular primary entrance.

With these modifications, the building will be redesigned to feature nine apartments on either side of a central corridor, each with a five-square-metre storage room located nearby.

The approved changes include constructing a new façade in buff brick—a contrasting colour to the existing building—and resurfacing the demolished area in matching tarmac.

Additionally, the conversion entails replacing the main reception area with a shared entrance for the new residents.

Swindon Borough Council planners endorsed the proposal as it supports urban regeneration objectives, designating the Intel Campus as an area with constrained residential yield potential.

MCR Group envisions 38 flats on the ground floor, 39 on the first floor, and 35 on the second floor.

By repurposing the existing structure for housing, the development will address the housing supply shortfall and align with planning policies at both national and local levels.

The transformation of the former Intel building is anticipated to make a significant contribution to meeting residential needs in the Swindon area.
