An elderly driver has pleaded guilty to careless driving after running a red light and injuring two six-year-old children in Swindon last month.

Harold Small, 89, from Corsham Road, Penhill, admitted to the offence at Swindon Crown Court on 7th January.

The collision occurred on Beechcroft Road, Swindon on 11th December 2023. The two schoolchildren were using a traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing when Small drove through the red light and struck them.

One child sustained a fractured arm, while the other suffered cuts and bruises.

The mother of one victim spoke about the impact on her family, saying: "This incident has changed our lives. I wouldn’t wish the effects it has had on us on my worst enemy."

The other child's mother added: "The boys stepped into the road and my whole life changed. This incident has changed our lives."

DC Alex Way, from the Serious Collision Investigation Team, emphasized the importance of vigilance behind the wheel, particularly near schools:

"I know this incident has had a lasting effect on all those involved, both physically and emotionally. I am pleased that today has brought some justice for the families and will hopefully prevent further victims.”

"This case is a stark reminder to all drivers to pay closer attention to their driving, especially around schools where young children are using the roads and pathways," DC Way said.

Small will return to Swindon Crown Court for sentencing on 16th February.
