Man dies in head-on crash in Swindon

A man has died after a two-vehicle crash in Swindon.

Emergency services were called to William Morris Way near Great Western Academy yesterday afternoon.

One of the drivers, a man in his 80s, was removed from his vehicle before it caught alight.

Police say he suffered a cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

In a statement, officers confirmed: "A man has sadly died following a collision on William Morris Way, Swindon, yesterday afternoon (02/06).

"At around 1.05pm, we responded to a head on collision between a silver Hyundai i10 and an MG HS near Great Western Academy.

"The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, was removed from his vehicle by members of the public prior to it catching alight, but sadly suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this sad time.

"The driver of the MG HS, a woman in her 30s, suffered injuries which are not thought to be serious.

"The road was closed in both directions to allow for enquiries to take place and has now reopened.

"Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have dash cam are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 153 of yesterday’s date.
