Man charged in connection with Morrisons armed robbery in Swindon

The charges relate to an incident on the morning of the August 26 at the Morrisons store in Penhill Drive Swindon

A man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery at the Morrisons store in Penhill Drive, Swindon, on August 26.

Matthew Softley, 53, of Western Street, Old Town, has been charged with robbery and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

He appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning (September 20) where he was remanded into custody.

Wiltshire Police said the charges relate to an incident at around 6.25am on August 26, when a suspect enter the store with a knife, threatened an employee and stole alcohol.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "We would like to thank the public for their help in identifying Softley after they released images as part of the investigation."
