Fans of Swindon Town FC saw club legend John Trollope run out of the tunnel onto the pitch home and away, more than 800 times.

Now that familiar image will be preserved for posterity and future generations to come, as the club has been given the go-ahead to put up a statue to its record appearance holder outside the County Ground.

Planners at Swindon Borough Council have agreed to Swindon Town Community Foundation’s proposal to put a statue of the defender outside its offices at Foundation Park.

The digital mock-up of the statue shows it will be slightly larger than life-size and six feet six inches and is taken from a picture of John running out of the tunnel in a Robins’ kit typical of the 1970s.

The foundation’s application said the statue is to honour John’s work as both a player, manager and his contribution to the Swindon and Wiltshire community

It said: “Having seen the wonderful statue of Don Rogers, we have decided that we want to celebrate one of our 1969 heroes, with a statue of John Trollope – not only for his role in the historic cup victory, but in recognition of his immense contribution and commitment to Swindon Town FC and the STFC Community Foundation.”
