Great Western Hospitals NHS Trust receives 'Good' rating from CQC
Ratings improve overall, but maternity services require further enhancements
Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has achieved a 'Good' overall rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), marking progress in enhancing patient care, staff experience, and the care environment.
Despite the overall improvement, the Trust's maternity services remain at 'Requires Improvement,' with ongoing efforts to enhance the programme for family-led care.
The CQC carried out inspections across the Trust, including the Medicine, Surgery and Planned Care, and Family and Specialist Services divisions, by interacting with staff and patients to assess the quality of care provided.
The inspectors noted a welcoming environment with friendly staff and a strong patient-support system that encouraged informed decisions about care.
Cara Charles-Barks, Chief Executive of BSW Hospitals Group, expressed pride in the 'Good' rating, attributing it to the commitment of the staff amidst significant NHS challenges.
She highlighted the Trust's advancements in patient care, including innovations to reduce falls and pressure harm in hospital, new clinics, and digital tools to minimise waiting lists.
In maternity services, significant steps are being taken to address CQC feedback, with a focus on learning from family feedback, improving accessibility to staff, and strengthening leadership.
The maternity team recently earned the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Gold Award and launched a new Transitional Care Unit, as well as neonatal oral antibiotics at home, allowing families earlier discharge from the hospital.
Inspectors praised the teamwork and leadership within maternity services, highlighting a continuous improvement culture across the Trust's services.
