Gary Sumner takes leadership of Swindon Borough Council under Conservative minority
Focus on collaborative governance and community priorities
Councillor Gary Sumner has been elected as the Leader of Swindon Borough Council, assuming responsibility under a Conservative minority administration after a vote during the Annual Council meeting on 22nd May.
All 57 councillors attended the meeting at the Civic Offices, where Cllr Sumner, leader of the Conservative Group, secured his position without pursuing a formal coalition with other political groups.
In his acceptance speech, Cllr Sumner expressed his commitment to providing stable leadership and addressing residents' concerns.
He stated, “It's a privilege to take on the role of Leader at such an important time for Swindon. Residents expect stability, responsible decision-making and a clear focus on the issues that matter most to them.”
Cllr Sumner announced the composition of Swindon Borough Council’s new Cabinet:
Councillor Jake Chandler, Deputy Leader, Strategy, Resilience, and Green Infrastructure
Councillor Vinay Manro, Adults and Health
Councillor Keith Williams, Finance, Recovery, and Transformation
Councillor Matthew Courtliff, Housing and Property
Councillor Kate Tomlinson, Children and Education
Councillor Nick Gardiner, Highways and Transport
Councillor Matt Vallender, Culture, Planning, and Regeneration
Councillor Kevin Parry, Recycling and Streetscene
Councillor Matt Hinton, Community Engagement, Safety, and Services
The meeting also saw Councillor Neil Hopkins elected as Mayor for the forthcoming municipal year, succeeding Councillor Fay Howard.
Cllr Gayle Cook was elected Deputy Mayor.
As part of his leadership, Cllr Sumner will oversee efforts in areas such as inward investment, economic development, the Local Plan, and fostering relations at local, regional, and national levels.
