A man from Devizes has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for indecently assaulting a girl during the 1990s.

Lloyd Burgess, 65, from Sheep Street, Devizes, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault at Winchester Crown Court. These offences occurred between October 1995 and October 1998.

He was sentenced last week on 1st May.

The case began in 2021 when Wiltshire Police received a report alleging Burgess had indecently assaulted a girl who was around 11 years old at the time.

Burgess was arrested, and police conducted extensive enquiries into the allegations.

Detective Constable Nicky Cross praised the victim for reporting the assault despite the passage of time.

Det Con Cross said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to praise the victim in this case for her bravery in reporting her ordeal to police all these years later. In doing so, she has enabled us to conduct an investigation into Burgess’ offending and ensure he was put before the courts."

"This case should serve as an example to anyone who may have experienced this kind of ordeal that it is crucial you report this to police regardless of how much time has since passed. We will always take reports of this nature seriously and will leave no stone unturned in investigating offenders like Burgess."

In addition to the prison sentence, Burgess has been handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and is required to sign the Sex Offenders Register.

Victims of sexual assault are urged to contact the police by calling 101.
