Wiltshire Police say they spent Tuesday (02/09) evening making sure the Swindon and Reading Football League Trophy match at the County Ground was held safely.

They say how there were around 200 fans identified from both Swindon and Reading that could pose a risk to public order.

Specialist officers including Public Order, Dog Handlers, Dedicated Football Officers (DFOs) and Operational Football Officers (or spotters) were used to escort the away fans from the train station to the county ground and back in a safe manner.

No arrests were made and no football related crimes committed.

Preparing to police a football match can take weeks. A lot of work is done behind the scenes collecting intelligence and working with partners such as the football club, other emergency services, local council and local licensees.

Superintendent Mark Lynch said: “While most fans come to enjoy the match peacefully, we do occasionally encounter individuals who behave disruptively. When that happens, our officers respond firmly and appropriately.

“Matchdays attract families and young children, so ensuring their safety is a top priority. We’re not here to spoil anyone’s fun, but if someone crosses the line—whether through violence, aggression, or drug use—we will take action.

“This kind of behaviour has no place in or around football grounds.

“We encourage anyone with concerns to speak to our officers. We’re here to listen and help.”
