Bishops Cannings wins boundary dispute with Devizes, gains approximately 200 homes
Parish set for expansion, pending potential development of supermarkets and McDonald’s
Bishops Cannings has emerged victorious in its long-standing boundary dispute with Devizes, bringing an end to debates over community changes and expansions in the northern edge of town.
Following Wiltshire Council's full meeting on 20th October, councillors voted decisively to redefine boundaries, allowing land with around 200 new homes at Lock Keeper Gardens to transfer from Devizes to Bishops Cannings by the May 2029 local elections.
Additionally, proposals to rename the parish to Bishops Cannings and Northfields secured unanimous support, reflecting its modern rural and semi-urban character.
The boundary change enhances Bishops Cannings' capacity to incorporate potential developments like Aldi, Tesco supermarkets, and a McDonald’s restaurant.
This decision emerged as a counter to earlier proposals from Devizes Town Council, which sought to absorb the more urban parts of Bishops Cannings and their residents.
Parish council chairman Darren Bone emphasized the importance of community strength and maintaining the parish's unique identity.
Wiltshire Council member Philip Whitehead insisted that the dispute was always about communities rather than geographical borders, acknowledging the holistic nature of Bishops Cannings.
Other approved adjustments included minor changes elsewhere and warding arrangements, as well as preserving Braydon's autonomy following residents’ concerns.
Bishops Cannings anticipates launching a new website and logo before the year's end to celebrate its expanded identity.
